Genealogy in the Kenora District of Northwestern Ontario
I am interested in (my mother, Gertrude Lillian Lewis, was born 1909 Kenora) ancestors in and around the (present day) Kenora region. The surname searches of particular intrest are Faulkner (Keewatin), Lewis and Fisher (Rat Portage/Kenora). There is in particular a Faulkner family in Keewatin (George B Faulkner, my Great Grandfather, born circa 1852 England) his wife Mary Ann (nee Bamforth) born 1864 McKillop, Huron county, Ont. This family is in 1901 and 1911 Rat Portage/Kenora census Rainy River / Algoma / Kenora dist. total of 10 children. I will post this family Group Sheet at earliest convenience.
This George B Faulkner (above) born 5 September 1851/52 England, is my Brick Wall. cannot find his ships passenger listing, or English birth records. Unable to find the marriage record which I have good reason to believe was about 1878/79 either in McKillop tsp, Huron county Ont or maybe in the Emerson, Manitoba area. They were predominantly Methodists. Their first born child, Rosanna Lillian Faulkner, is my grandmother. She was born in Emerson, Manitoba in 1880. George and Mary Ann moved from the Huron co. area to Manitoba, likely in the late 1870's. The Bamforth family (the parents of Mary Ann, are Charles and Charlotte Bamforth) also moved to Manitoba a little later, about the mid/late 1870's. George Faulkner was admitted to the Selkirk Sanitorium in Selkirk Manitoba in 1907. He died there in 1913.
I have been looking for George's marriage record and his ships passeneger record to no avail. George is shown in the 1901 census to have emmigrated to Canada in 1871. There are some distant cousins of mine thought to still be living in and/or around the Kenora area today. This information comes to me from a newly found living cousin (Craig faulkner) that I have just days ago met for the first time and who has giving me some family related information of these early ancestors and the many decendants of these people in my current records. There is also one other individual of intrest who was the second husband of Mrs George Faulkner (Mary Ann - widow). she married, Albert Wright in Kenora in 1914. I am told that he was well known and liked in the Kenora area.
some other surnames related to these people in that area and at the same time period. are.....Hugh Griffith Lewis and Rosanna Lillian Faulkner (my grandparents) ; Folster / Fisher / some of these surnames married into the Faulkner family.
If anyone out there knows anything of any of these people, listed above, I sure would like to hear from them
Many thanks to those who sponsored this web site, I look forward to colaborating with you.
Sincerely Yours

I am still riding on the learning curve of "ASK". it's going to take a while to assimilate all that info. so i'll likley be trying out some of the features as time goes by.
thanks again

Comment by Becky Johnson on December 13, 2012 at 6:24am Hi Alan,
A group of volunteers are working on the Kenora Great War Project, researching local lads who served in WW1. Two of the men are Vincent and Reginald Faulkner, the sons of George and Mary Ann. You can read the biographies we've written on the Canadian Great War Project website, Vincent's is here:
http://www.canadiangreatwarproject.com/searches/soldierDetail.asp?I...
You'll notice under Images there are some newspaper articles, including a wonderful letter about Vincent, who earned the Military Medal. There is also a biography for Reginald on the same site, if you do a search.
Like you, I was unable to find the marriage record and passenger info for George. If you have anything further to add to the biographies, or if you have family photos or war memorabilia you'd like to share, we'd love to hear from you. The Kenora museum is planning an exhibit in 2014 to honour the lads who served WW1.
Becky
